Merrie Monarch 2017

I had the honor and privilege to blossom on the line of Hālau Mōhala ‘Ilima - making the annual journey to Hilo to share our hula: hula from our Kumu, Māpuana de Silva, from our Kumu's Kumu, and her Kumu, and so on and so forth.  Since then life has blessed me with a family, a career, and now the opportunity to paepae the efforts and growth of these beautiful women in a new way.

Dress designed in collaboration with Hālau to honor "Hi‘ilawe Song" composed by Sam ‘I Kalainaina

“The long, simple, sleeveless dress takes its design cues from the ‘āina that is the setting for the mele: the round neckline mimics the iconic curved shape of Waipi‘o valley, the chiffon overlay is reminiscent of the famed waterfalls and piʻo characteristic, and the burgundy/fuchsia color combination reminds us of the ‘ōhi‘a ‘ai lined banks of Lālākea stream.”
