Our pareu feature the artwork from the PŌHAKU Collection for the MAMo Wearable Arts Show. The PŌHAKU Collection explores our relationship with, and our Kūpuna's relationship with, pōhaku - their foundation and their ability to give (and take) life.
This print, "Loko I'a", was inspired by the fishponds that were created and maintained by Native Hawaiians. The fishpond was often near the river mouth, creating a rich, ideal environment to raise sea life for consumption by the people of the ahupua'a. Using pōhaku, or rocks, a wall was built in shallower waters with a gate whose openings were large enough to allow small fish in but small enough to keep them in the pond as they grow. This created an ideal fishing ground where both sea life and people could prosper.
